Most owners won’t like the oil consumption, and future engine re- freshening requirements of a healthy blue motor. Yes I was speaking to Shane or the Shanester as I call him Warranty nightmare we were told at the regatta as I asked. They just don't have anyone on the line they trust to rig it. I wonder if they would sell the boat without power and get it added somewhere else? You know it can be done. I had asked my dealer and Cobalt about a 520 in an R7 and they both said it couldn't be done. I am however a little mad the R5 shows the prop chart for the merc 520. I haven't once in my standard stern drive 380 R7 thought that I should have popped the extra dough on the 430.

Especially when you have the ballast full and 14 people on board. So I can see wanting the 430 in the surf. Looking at the prop chart I can see the FWD drive loses a little bit more power on time to plane and top speed. Don't know for sure but leaving that extra power on the table, I will always wonder. I wish I had gotten the 430 too, not that I have ever really felt under powered but occasionally I feel like it could have made a difference. I wish I would have gotten the 430 instead of the 380. With that many people it worked great for surfing but lacking in power fo wakeboarding and cruising. It didn’t feel crowded and it handled the choppy water very well. I had 14 people on my R5 Surf this weekend at Bear Lake. So buy the biggest you can afford on both. The R7 380 also seems like it takes a little longer to get me out of the water on a slalom ski than the R5 350.Ĭost is the only other negative with the R7 don't go less than the 380, R5 does great with the 350.Īnd before anyone else says it, "no one ever says I need a smaller boat or a less powerful engine" Negatives to the bigger boat, noticably harder to maneuver, but I have gotten really good over the course of the summer. I have had 6 college guys on my bow for an entire weekend with no complaints. R5 has a 14 person limit with no limit on the R7.

People get on my boat from his and ask how much wider it is, I tell them same width just longer and they are in shock because it feels bigger. Our most popular Sterndrive series, Cobalt’s storied core boat models that evolved to become the R Series embody all you need for a sporty day on the water. At lunchtime at a marina we see an R5 where he tries to convince me that it is a really small R5 and his is bigger, back at the dock he looks at his boat and was like, wow mine feels small now. I find many people love mine due to that extra little curve.Īt the end of summer I finally got my brother to spend a day on my boat. My brother has the R5 and has said on many occasions that the seat behind the captains chair is the worst seat on his boat, it is just akwerd. I wanted surf and found the area of the ski locker available in the R7 but it is a balast tank in the r5.
